ARLINGTON COUNTY FAIR MILE

ARLINGTON COUNTY FAIR MILE
Thomas Jefferson Community Center, Arlington VA, Saturday, August 21, 1999

At the 23rd annual Arlington County Fair, runners celebrated a
surprisingly cool Saturday morning in late August with a series of
one-mile races, pursuing the Fair's theme of Preserving Our Past,
Creating Our Future.

The festive two-loop course started at the playground and went past the
ice cream stands and chicken-on-a-stick and barbecue vendors, up the
little hill near the pony rides, down the hill by the Ferris wheel,
around the corner by the Magic Carpet ride, behind the pig races
breathlessly, and down to the finish line at the tennis court.

In the open mile, Warren Kohm, 28, of Sterling VA ran the fastest mile
of the day, 5:05.75. Second in 5:15.04 was Ted Poulos, 37, of McLean
VA, who holds the Guinness Book world record for most races run in one
year (226 in 1997). Paul Blaney, born in London but now of Washington
DC, was third by a nose in 5:16.51.

In the masters (over 40) mile, meet director Jay Jacob Wind, 49, of
Arlington VA won in 6:14.93, after passing DC Road Runners Club past
president Robert Platt, 48, also of Arlington, midway in the race.
Platt's time was 6:22.04. Richard Weston, 53, also of Arlington was
third among masters runners.

In the women's mile, McLean High School assistant coach Bernadette
Flynn, 42, of Fairfax VA took the lead in the first 100 meters and never
looked back, finishing in 6:37.26. Jennifer Westfall-McGrail, of
Arlington VA, at 44 another masters female, was second in 6:53.50, and
Dana Halkowski, 34, of Arlington was third in 7:13.29. Halkowski
brought three kids and a husband to run.

In the children's mile, Flynn's son Mike Creed, 12, of Fairfax VA took
the title in 6:34.38. Arlington Hershey Meet champion Brian Rooney, 9,
was second in 6:41.89, and Chris Hough, 12, traveled all the way from
Panama City FL to finish third in 6:59.97. Em Feeney, 8, of Arlington
VA was the first girl in 8:16.49.

Every child (and some adults) received all-day passes to rides in the
County Fair amusement park, courtesy of R.C. Cole. Every finisher won a
prize courtesy of 60 County Fair vendors, ranging from paperback books
donated by Arlington Unitarian Universalist Church to beautiful
Ecuadorean scarves and Ethiopian sculpture. A dozen food vendors
contributed meal platters, and Honest Tea and Colombo Yogurt provided
post-race refreshments. Volunteers included Les Morgan, Paul Showalter,
and Toby Smith from the County Fair and Robert Platt, Dick Rhoads, Susan
Rizzieri, Estelle Roth, John Warden and Jay Jacob Wind from DC Road
Runners Club.
