After a difficult winter, the spring greenery was on display the evening of May 1st at Lake Accotink Park.. Last year’s race was cancelled due to a tornado warning and high water at the park. The race has also attracted enough rain over the years to end many droughts. But this year the weather cooperated and the runners enjoyed a pleasant evening.
As for the race itself, the inexorable and indefatigable Ted Poulos cruised to victory in 28:19, edging Bruce Halpin by six seconds. Cheryl McMurray led the women in 31:49 and was 9th overall. Winners received the coveted DCRRC glassware with logo. In all, 63 runners completed the race, the highest participation in some years.
The race director would very much like to thank the volunteers. Dick and Martha Sargent did their usual experienced and reliable job as combination sentries, registrars, and finish line managers. Also, the Groves family jumped in at the last minute and assisted with the water stop and sentry duties.
