DCRRC Belle Haven 25K Championship Race

The rains came, hard and wind-driven, early on Saturday morning, but left just in time for the race to be run in almost dry conditions. The runners who "chanced it" were rewarded with almost perfect conditions for a long race with overcast skies, no wind and temperatures in the low 60's. That left only the distance, the many curves, and the few hills to challenge them. And, of course, their fellow runners.

Alex Filides (1:36:52) of Takoma Park led all finishers. His closest challenger was Richard Rapine (1:37:22) from nearby Alexandria. Brian Whitten, also of Alexandria, ran first among the Masters, finishing in 1:41:00, good for fifth overall. Four of the top ten men are Masters runners, not unusual for club races in these parts. Jay Wind and Ben Richter used this race to lock up their age group titles for the 2004 Snowball Series--congrats, gentlemen! On the ladies' side of the ledger, Dierdre McCarthy Gallagher from Arlington finished first (13th overall) in a fine 1:49:37. She was followed by Nichole Bukowski, also of Arlington (these ladies make Jay Wind feel proud!), in 1:52:27. In third place and the ladies Masters winner was Win Persina in 1:57:40. (Win, you hardly look your age.) Priscilla Prunella (now a very young 60) and her husband Warren came over from Rockville to get in a quality distance race in their runup to Boston where Priscilla had an outstanding run last year. Priscilla's tuneup time was 2:10:41, good for 13th place among female finishers.

There were 96 official finishers in the race, and a few runners who failed to fill out their finisher cards. We had several dropouts. One hundred and three runners were signed up.

The club would like to thank the outstanding volunteers who showed up to make this race possible even though they faced the possibility of a severe drenching: the ever present Rolland Elliott, Erica, Wiley and Tucker Holland, Ted Cochrane, Jim Hall, George Robertson, Dick Sargent, George Gunn, Ofelia Perotti, Lucinda Baker, Steve Zweifach, Alice Wang, and Kelly Lear.
