Under adverse conditions, sometimes you just have to grin and bear it and get out and run! That's what 83 finishers decided on the morning of Sunday, February 1 for the Custis 12K, to benefit the Hospice of Northern Virginia.
The course was modified this year to accommodate a start across Wilson Boulevard at Bluemont Park. The thick layer of snow on that portion of the Four Mile Run Trail, and the snow and icy conditions on the Bluemont Field, didn't deter a group of pickup football players, no doubt warming up for the Super Bowl later that day. Adrienne Ash, from the Hospice, gave all the runners a warm thank you, and off they went. Conditions improved once they hit the junction with the Custis Trail, but snow and icy patches the rest of the way made the course an adventure. There were a few minor falls.
Still, the course yielded some impressive times for its difficulty, particularly among the men. Bob Schneider was first in 42:54, followed by Alex Filides in 44:58, and the indomitable Ted Poulos in 47:12. Tamiz Ahmed, visiting from New Jersey, was first in the 19 and under category, and Richard Rapine was first 30-39 in 48:05, followed by 20-29 age group winner Ben Hedman in 48:06. Nadim Ahmed was first 40-49 in 48:35, and Paul Ryan was first 50-59 in 50:14. John Haubert took advantage of the lack of competition and finished first in the 60-69 group at 56:17. Julie Lose was the first woman in 1:01:11, followed by Peggy Dickison in 1:01:25 and Tanya Calvo in 1:03:59. Toni Marie Diegoli was first in 20-29 in 1:04:25. Meg Ferris won the 30-39 in 1:09:04, Janet Abbate was the first 40-49 in 1:08:38, and Rosemary Nelson was first in 50-59 in 1:15:09.
The top two finishers in the fun run, which ended up being about 2.65 miles, were James Scarborough in 22:11 and Ted Cochrane in 24:41. A hearty thanks to all those who helped out and those who braved the cold and put up with the snow, ice, start and finish being in different locations, timers that wouldn't work, cars that wouldn't start, etc. But, there was little wind, clear skies, and plenty of sunshine. The Ground Hog might see his shadow the day after, but he could have warmed himself up plenty by running the trails of Arlington on a cold crisp day.
